For too long, we’ve fallen into the trap of ranking schools in much the same way the Premium League used to rank its teams: by raw, absolute data – typically, exam results.
Imagine a school operating in an area with high levels of socio-economic deprivation, where students face significant challenges outside the classroom. They might have limited access to resources, less support at home, or come from families with no history of higher education. Now, compare that to a school in an affluent area, with abundant resources and students from highly educated backgrounds. If we simply look at their raw exam results, the affluent school will almost certainly appear to be “better.”
But is that truly fair? Does it tell the whole story of the incredible effort, dedication, and ingenuity shown by the teachers and staff at the school overcoming significant hurdles?
This is where the “contextualised points” of education come in.
Just as a football team’s wage bill impacts its potential raw points, a school’s context – its student intake, its funding levels, the socio-economic challenges it navigates – profoundly impacts its raw exam results. To judge schools purely on these raw figures is to ignore the immense value they add, often against incredible odds.
By using contextualised performance measures, such as “contextualised value-added”, or contextualised progress scores, we shift the focus. These metrics assess how much progress students make from their starting points, rather than just their final attainment. It’s the educational equivalent of “points per £1M salary.” It asks: Given the students they started with, how effectively did this school help them progress?
The benefits of this approach are profound:
- Fairer Assessment: It allows us to fairly evaluate schools based on their actual impact, not just the background of their students.
- Recognising True Excellence: It highlights the unsung heroes – schools that may not have the highest raw attainment but are doing exceptional work in transforming the lives and learning journeys of their students.
- Encouraging Inclusivity: It removes any perverse incentive for schools to “cherry-pick” easier-to-teach students, encouraging them to embrace and support all learners.
- Targeted Support: It helps policymakers and educators identify what truly effective practices look like, even in challenging environments, allowing for better resource allocation and support.
Just as the “Premium League” is evolving to celebrate efficiency and smart management, our education system must evolve to genuinely value every school’s journey and every student’s progress. It’s time to move beyond simplistic league tables and embrace a more nuanced, equitable and ultimately more truthful measure of success.
